Swords were the main weapons of war during the Middle Age. Medieval swords have a real rich history that even today their replicas are very famous and are being excessively used in movies, video games, comics, stage plays, reenactments and costumes. Perhaps, because of the prosperous history and seemingly mystical effect of medieval swords many people all around the world have developed a hobby of collecting swords. They collect these swords and also use them in a number of ways such as practicing sword fighting techniques, displaying for decorative purposes, using in stage performances, and as costumes in medieval faires or costume parties.
There are basically three kinds of medieval sword replicas available in the market. Firstly, there are decorative or ornamental swords. These swords are constructed for decoration and display only. They are very sophisticated and finely crafted to exactly match the original ones. They are often available with a sword stand or plaque for displaying in a home or office. Decorative swords feature blades that are made up of stainless steel and are polished to high sheen. They can be hanged on walls or placed on shelves or inside glass boxes for a marvelous display. They have a very authentic look but are not intended for functional use. Decorative replica swords include Roman sword, Viking swords, Samurai swords and Celtic swords. There are also wonderful decorative movie swords, video game swords, anime swords, fantasy swords, ninja swords and pirate swords.
The second type of swords is costume swords. Most of their characteristics resemble to those of a decorative sword but they are normally lighter in weight. Costume swords are mostly available with a scabbard or case or some straps for wearing the sword. These swords complete the look of a medieval outfit and are very popular for costume parties and Renaissance Faires.
The last type of swords is functional swords. These are battle ready swords and can be perfectly used for sword fighting, reenactments and martial arts. High quality carbon steel is used in the construction of the blades of these swords. The grip, pommel and guard of these swords are also made from sturdy and high quality materials to ensure durability. Functional swords are therefore comparatively expensive than the decorative and costume swords. They are very durable and finely crafted to match the original medieval swords.
